A University of Cincinnati student is suing the school in federal court, saying she was told she had to work with other female students and not with male students in a physics lab.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports (http://cin.ci/29gys2D ) 19-year-old Casey Helmicki filed a gender discrimination lawsuit this month asking the university to stop segregating classes or educational programs by sex.

Helmicki says a teaching assistant last August told her to work only with other females.

The Enquirer reports the professor who created the policy defended it in emails with other officials. He says physicists are mostly males and studies show females perform better in small labs consisting mostly of females.

A university attorney in April said the policy had changed.

The university didn't immediately return messages seeking comment Wednesday.
