Last ex-cop defendant in post-Katrina deaths to change plea

NEW ORLEANS – A former New Orleans police officer is set for a change-of-plea hearing on charges related to deadly shootings by police after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Attorneys had said in court filings that plea negotiations were underway with Gerard Dugue (DOOH'-gay), who had pleaded not guilty to obstruction of justice and other charges. His change-of-plea hearing is set for next Friday — three days before his scheduled trial.

Dugue is the last remaining defendant in connection with the shootings that happened on Sept. 4, 2005, days after levee failures caused catastrophic flooding in and around New Orleans.

Earlier this year, four former officers pleaded guilty in connection with the shootings that killed two unarmed civilians at New Orleans' Danziger Bridge. A fifth pleaded guilty in the cover-up.
