A large Christian rally on the National Mall ended earlier than planned after several hundred people had to be treated for illnesses related to extreme heat.

Media reports say the young evangelical rally, called "Together 2016," ended Saturday several hours earlier than initially scheduled because of high temperatures.

Rescue workers responded to hundreds of calls for heat-related injuries.

The rally was organized by Minnesota-based PULSE, a nonprofit, and was aimed at trying to unite young Christians. The free event featured several speakers, musical acts and others, including a video message from Pope Francis.
