A woman was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of murder after Los Angeles police say she stabbed her 10-year-old daughter to death and then tried to commit suicide.

Detectives said Monday that 49-year-old Bong Sook Chavez remains hospitalized in stable condition. She'll be moved to a hospital jail ward when physically able.

Chavez is suspected of stabbing her daughter, Quesi, with a kitchen knife early Friday in their home at the Fort MacArthur military housing facility in San Pedro.

Police say her husband, a retired U.S. Navy reservist, woke up, ran to his daughter's bedroom and found his wife stabbing herself, and his daughter wounded. The girl died at the hospital.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact detectives.
