An Alabama nursing student who was kidnapped at gunpoint and trapped in the trunk of her own car is speaking out about her attack and how her insulin pump saved her life in an unexpected way.

Brittany Diggs, 25, jumped out of the trunk of a moving Nissan Altima after being kidnapped on March 14 in Birmingham. Gas station surveillance cameras recorded her daring escape.

Diggs told NBC's “Today” that it all began with a man trying to rob her outside of her home. When she told him she was “just a broke college student” and did not have any money, she was forced to drive him around while he tried to find other people to rob.

Eventually, she said the man told her to get in the trunk and he threatened her life multiple times.

“My biggest fear was he was going to drive this car into a river and I’m going to drown there and no one is going to know I’m in this trunk,” Diggs said.

While she was trapped in the trunk, she remembered seeing a video on Facebook about trunk latches. She realized there was a latch inside her own trunk, which she found in the darkness using her insulin pump light. She opened the trunk and jumped out.

Diggs decided to speak out to try and help catch her attacker. She says she has not slept at her apartment since her kidnapping.

“I try to put it in the back of my head so I can just get through the day, but that was the scariest thing that I’ve had to do,” she said. “It was just a lot because I’m not from here, I don’t have the support system down here besides my roommate. I just felt like it was a lot.”
