SALT LAKE CITY – A Utah judge says people living in a polygamous sect on the Utah-Arizona border who have not been paying occupancy fees should be evicted from their homes.
Judge Denise Lindberg's strong remarks came Friday in a Salt Lake City courtroom. Lindberg said that most members of Warren Jeffs' sect have been ignoring the $100-a-month, per house fee for too long and that "enough is enough."
She suggested starting with a few evictions to send a message, and expanding in the future.
Lindberg said she will not form a board to oversee the redistribution of 750 homes that have been in state control since 2005 until the practice of "free-riding" is dealt with.
Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said he would prefer a board is formed first, but that his office won't stand in the way.
