ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. – Attorneys for the last member of the Angola Three still behind bars have failed to persuade a judge to exclude key witness testimony against him and to throw out his indictment in the killing of a prison guard in 1972.
Judge William Carmichael Monday also ruled that the trial against Albert Woodfox could go forward in West Feliciana parish, rejecting defense motions to move the trial.
The state is trying Woodfox for the third time in the guard's slaying after previous convictions were overturned.
Woodfox appeared during the hearing Monday wearing a black and white striped jail uniform, his hands and feet shackled.
Tory Pegram, an activist supporting Woodfox, called the day "disappointing."
The "Angola Three" was made famous by extended stays in solitary confinement.
