'It looked like a sea monster': Surfer falls 40 feet into wave

A professional surfer was caught on video last Wednesday taking a 40-foot plunge while surfing off the coast of Maui, Hawaii.

The gripping video shows surfer Tom Dosland jumping onto his board on top of a massive blue waves. Fellow surfers can be seen sitting on jet skis in front of the wave as it grows in size.

Shortly after Dosland jumps on top of the board, he loses his footing and the board comes out from underneath him.

Dosland was interviewed by Surfer Magazine in an article titled, "Legend of the Fall."

“It looked like a sea monster rising out of the ocean when it came my way,” he said. “But I was going. No matter what. So I flipped around and started paddling to get into it. You can’t really tell from the video, but there was some wind blowing spray up the face as I was about to drop in, which pretty much blinded me for a few seconds. I could only see out of one eye, and only partially. So I was pretty much just going off of feeling for that brief second before you drop in. Then, I was able to open up both my eyes, and I realized what was about to happen.”

He said the fall felt like he “fell off a cliff.” He said it felt like “a brutal beating, like I was in a car crash.”

His board snapped and he reportedly had a stiff neck, but he managed to go back out the next day.
