An investigation is raising questions about the death of a woman who reported being kidnapped at a Montana rest stop and spending hours in the trunk of her car.

The body of 47-year-old Rita Maze of Great Falls was found early Wednesday near Spokane International Airport in Washington state. She had been shot, but the medical examiner listed the cause of death as pending.

The Spokesman-Review reports court documents say Maze was in the trunk with a handgun and two spent shell casings next to her. Her purse and keys were in the car.

Maze's daughter, Rochelle, said her mother called Tuesday evening saying she had been overpowered by a man who had her gun.

KHQ-TV reports an officer called Maze's cellphone number Tuesday night. Someone answered and the officer heard gunshots.
