In aftermath of Rolling Stone article, police report possible sexual assault of U.Va. student

The University of Virginia says police are investigating a possible sexual assault against a female student.

In a statement emailed to students, staff and faculty late Wednesday, the university says the student was found unconscious in an off-campus apartment Sunday and taken to the hospital.

University Police Chief Michael Gibson says in the statement that the student later had no memory of hours spent with a male acquaintance. Police say he served her drinks. The two originally become acquainted online.

Gibson says the woman's symptoms are consistent with drugs used to facilitate sexual assault.

The news comes after a 2014 Rolling Stone article about an alleged fraternity house gang rape thrust the school into the national spotlight. Police have said there's no credible evidence of an assault, and other parts of the story have been called into question.
