Heavy rain has snarled the Monday morning commute in Phoenix, closing sections of several freeways and numerous local roads.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for most of the Phoenix area and its outskirts because of heavy thunderstorms and rain.

Sections of Interstate 10 in the western part of the metro area and parts of Interstate 17 in Phoenix were closed.

Television video showed traffic crawling through standing water on I-10 in west Phoenix, and the state Department of Public Safety asked drivers to postpone their commute.

In central Phoenix, Sky Harbor International Airport received over 2 inches of rain since midnight.

Electricity outages are reported in Sun City, Glendale and Scottsdale, with more than 5,000 customers losing power.
