Harvard University police planned to increase their presence on the Ivy League campus this weekend after hundreds of students and affiliates received emailed death threats on Friday.
In emails sent at about 4:45 p.m., the writer "threatened to come to campus 'tomorrow' to shoot the email recipients," the Harvard University Police Department wrote in a campus advisory.
Harvard notified local law-enforcement agencies and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the advisory said. The campus police department said it couldn’t determine if the threat was real but was taking it seriously, including beefing up police at the Cambridge, Mass., campus.
According to the Harvard Crimson, the campus newspaper, the emails were racially charged, and many of the recipients appeared to be Asian. The paper said some of the targets received emails with the same message at 4:40 p.m. from a different email address.
