DENVER – Police say a suburban Denver police officer was shot and wounded during a traffic stop and a manhunt is underway for the shooter.
The shooting occurred Friday night in the city of Aurora, just east of Denver.
Police spokesman Frank Fania tells the Denver Post (http://dpo.st/1xGPYoB ) that two officers made the stop about 9 p.m. MST and shots fired from inside the car hit one of them.
He says that the second officer returned fire but it isn't known whether anyone was hit.
The wounded officer was taken to a hospital, but Fania declined to provide any information on the officer's condition.
The suspect fled after abandoning a car two blocks from the site.
Area residents were urged to stay indoors as officers from several agencies, aided by police dogs and a helicopter, searched.
Police spokesmen could not immediately be reached for further comment.
