A group of prominent civil rights attorneys and others are filing a court petition to force Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez's office to hand over to a special prosecutor the case of a white police officer charged in the shooting death of black teenager Laquan McDonald.

A spokesman for the group, Jim Bray, says the petition scheduled to be filed Tuesday calls for the removal of Alvarez's office from both the prosecution of Officer Jason Van Dyke and any further investigation of potential police misconduct by other officers after the shooting because of Alvarez's close ties to both the department and the police officers' union.

Among those who are part of the petition are Locke Bowman of Northwestern University's law school and Flint Taylor of the People's Law Office.
