Group home resident dies after confrontation with police

Police say a resident of a group home has died after a confrontation with officers near a public park in Virginia.

Fairfax County police say the unidentified 45-year-old man had wandered away from his group Wednesday afternoon at Round Tree Park in the Falls Church area. Officers found him and tried to get him to return to his caretakers when a struggle ensued.

Police spokesman Don Gotthardt says the man was at one point placed in handcuffs.

At some point, police say, the man had a medical emergency and medics were called. The man was declared dead shortly after arriving at a hospital.

Gotthardt did not know the race of the man who died or the officers who came in contact with him.
