A Georgia man discovered several suspected meth labs underneath his rental home, MyFoxAtlanta.com reports.
Billy Jack Goodwin said his family had just moved into the home. He thought he had a problem with his air conditioning duct, so he went underneath the house to investigate.
He then fell into a hole that was deep enough to stand in and had the makings of a meth lab, according to investigators.
“We believe there were six individual labs underneath the house,” said Captain Mark Mayton of the Bartow County Drug Task Force.
Mayton said the suspected labs were so large and volatile that they had to cut through the family's living room floor to safely lift all the chemicals out.
“I hated it for that family, but there was no safe way for us to bring the labs out without creating additional space,” said Mayton.
Goodwin says that was the least of his worries. His young daughter had been having asthma flare-ups since they moved into the home two weeks ago.
“She was having a lot more coughing, having to take a lot more breathing treatments,” said Goodwin. “They cleaned out all the chemicals and anything that was harmful.”
After two days of cleanup, the Goodwin family was allowed back inside. They said they have a hard time believing something so dangerous was right underneath their floorboards.
“What scares me the most is, I've heard of these things blowing up and there's no good ending in that,” Goodwin said.
Agents say the home was recently purchased, so there are no charges in this case. They're not sure who had previously lived there because it had been vacant for so long. Investigators say they don’t know how long those chemicals had been there.
