A Georgia man drowned on Monday after police say he jumped into a lake to save his 64-year-old father who accidentally fell off their boat.
Jermiah Israel’s body was recovered by search and rescue teams several hours after officials said he jumped into the West Point Lake to save his elderly father who had fallen off their docked boat, the Troup County Sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Deputies were dispatched to the lake under the Cameron Mill Road bridge at around 12:22 a.m. after receiving reports of a possible drowning. Witnesses told investigators the 34-year-old Jonesboro man jumped into the water in an attempt to save his father.

Other boaters were able to assist and eventually pulled Israel’s father from the lake. He was taken to WellStar West Georgia Hospital for treatment where he was later released, the sheriff’s office said.
Sgt. Stewart Smith said the pair were fishing Sunday when they decided to dock their boat to the bridge and sleep, The LaGrange Daily News reported. That’s when the 64-year-old father, thinking he was at home, got up to walk to the restroom but instead fell overboard, Smith said.

Deputies and rangers with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) were unable to locate the victim until 10:47 a.m. at which time he was pronounced dead.
The death has been treated as an accidental drowning and the DNR was continuing to investigate.
