Parts of a Detroit suburb were evacuated early Saturday after a gas line exploded, causing a massive explosion and fire.
Fox 2 Detroit reported the explosion took place just before 3 a.m. local time in Melvindale. The blast could be heard two miles away in Dearborn. Flames from the resulting fire could also be seen that distance away approximately 90 minutes later.
WXYZ reported that the explosion was caused by a fire that began when a car struck a nearby power line. The station reported that a natural gas substation near a power plant was on fire.
It was not immediately clear how many homes had to be evacuated. WXYZ reported injuries, but it was not clear how many people were hurt.
Local police told evacuated residents to take shelter in a high school next to a Baptist church in Allen Park. The Red Cross was responding to assist residents.
