Funeral Mass to be held for Cardinal Edward Egan at St. Patrick's Cathedral

Cardinal Edward Egan will be eulogized from the Fifth Avenue pulpit where he once preached.

A funeral Mass for the 82-year-old Roman Catholic prelate who led the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York for nearly a decade is being celebrated Tuesday at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Egan's successor as archbishop, is to preside.

Egan died Thursday of a heart attack.

He's to be interred in a crypt under the main altar of the cathedral that is the seat of the New York archdiocese.

A theological force at the Vatican, Egan was an authority on church law tapped by Pope John Paul II to help revise the Code of Canon Law for the global church. Egan later oversaw an overhaul of New York church finances, eliminating a multi-million-dollar debt.
