OLYMPIA, Wash. – An arbitrator has ordered a former Lacey, Wash., man to pay his ex-wife $25,000 in the death of her cat.
Justin Chlarson was accused of kicking the cat in May 2010, when the couple were still married. He later pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor charge of second-degree animal cruelty, receiving a suspended 90-day jail sentence and $1,000 fine.
The man's lawyer, Christopher Taylor, tells The Olympian (http://is.gd/hIBfF1 ) that his client has moved to California and won't appeal the arbitrator's decision.
Thurston County Arbitrator Harold Carr's recent decision broke down plaintiff Kendra Vorhies Flores' damages into $15,000 for the cat and $10,000 for her emotional suffering.
The 23-year-old Lacey woman says she'd had the long-haired calico cat since she was 11.
