WASHINGTON – A deaf former inmate of the D.C. Department of Corrections whose care was mismanaged during his incarceration has been awarded $70,000 in damages.
The Washington Post reports (http://wapo.st/1ZIPKt3) that a federal grand jury made the award Wednesday. A judge in September found D.C. jail officials liable for failing to assess what accommodations William Pierce needed during his incarceration in 2012.
An eight-person jury deliberated less than a day after a six-day damages trial for Pierce.
Arthur B. Spitzer, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of the Nation's Capital, says the organization and Pierce were pleased by the verdict.
The D.C. Department of Corrections and the Corrections Corporation of America, which runs the jail, did not respond to the paper's requests for comment.
