Former Calif. Assembly speaker's son pleads guilty to manslaughter in fatal stabbing

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The son of former state Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and another young man have pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of a San Diego college student in 2008.

Esteban Nunez and co-defendant Ryan Jett could face 16 years in prison for the death of Luis Santos.

Prosecutors said Esteban Nunez, Jett and two other men were angry because they were refused entry to a fraternity party and attacked Santos as he walked nearby.

Defense attorneys say the men acted in self-defense.

Charges of assault and conspiracy to destroy evidence were dismissed Wednesday.

Sentencing is set for June 25.
