Florida woman dies after being handcuffed earlier by police

Authorities say a woman died at a hospital after being handcuffed earlier by police outside a Jacksonville convenience store.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the woman entered the store Friday night and was staggering and stumbling. She banged into display cases and tried to exit the back of the store, triggering an alarm.

A clerk escorted her outside the store, where she collapsed. Chief Chris Butler says two deputies arrived to find the woman flailing her arms and handcuffed her. They removed the handculffs when an ambulance arrived.

Butler said she never threatened officers and they didn't use force on the woman. He said she was handcuffed as standard procedure to protect officers and others at the store.

Clerks said the woman had previously caused problems at the business.
