A Delaware volunteer firefighter died Monday evening after he fell from a helicopter during a training exercise, authorities said.

Delaware State Police identified the firefighter in a statement Tuesday morning as 46-year-old Tim McClanahan of Lewes.

Police said McClanahan, one of two volunteer firefighters on board a helicopter at the Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown, fell onto a grassy area from an undetermined height as he stepped out onto the helicopter's skid. The helicopter landed, and the medic and firefighter on board and others nearby immediately rendered medical assistance.

McClanahan was taken to Beebe Healthcare, where he was pronounced dead. The Lewes Fire Department announced a member's death on its Facebook page.

Police said the Federal Aviation Administration would lead the investigation into the death.
