A teacher fired from a Catholic school in Montana for being unmarried and pregnant has reached a confidential settlement with the school district and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena.

Shaela Evenson was fired from Butte Central Catholic Schools in 2014 after the diocese received an anonymous letter saying she was having a baby out of wedlock. Evenson sued, accusing the school district and the diocese of pregnancy discrimination, sex discrimination and breach of contract.

After months of negotiations, the sides filed notice Monday that they reached an agreement and they expect to ask a judge to dismiss the case next week.

Superintendent Tim Uhl said Tuesday that the agreement is confidential. He says the diocese did not want to cause more pain by taking the case to trial.
