Officials say a fire has destroyed a Jersey shore motel that housed some victims of Superstorm Sandy, killing at least three people and critically injuring three others.

Firefighters responded to the Mariner's Cove Motor Inn in Point Pleasant Beach just after 5:30 a.m. Friday.

One of the superstorm victims, Joe Frystock, says a trip to the bathroom probably saved his life. He awoke to popping noises he said were the sounds of wood burning above him.

He says he pounded on doors to warn others to get out.

Peter Kuch says he jumped from a second-story window as flames rolled into his room.

A spokesman for the Ocean County prosecutor's office says the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
