Fire blackens about 50 acres in southeast Nebraska

Four fire departments have combined forces to put out a blaze that blackened nearly 50 acres of land in southeast Nebraska.

Beatrice radio station KWBE reports that nearly five dozen firefighters were involved.

The blaze began Monday afternoon seven miles south of Dorchester. Dorchester Fire Chief Todd Axline says the fire began after a bearing overheated on a hay baler.

Firefighters were dispatched about 3:45 p.m., and they left the scene just before 9 p.m. Farmers used their equipment to disk around the fire perimeter to keep it from spreading.

Two firefighters were taken to Crete Area Medical Center for treatment and soon were released.

No damage to buildings was reported.
