CONCORD, N.H. – CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a New Hampshire woman involved in the Rwandan genocide of 1994 lied to get U.S. citizenship.
Forty-year-old Beatrice Munyenyezi (MOON'-yen-yezi) of Manchester was indicted Thursday on two counts of procuring citizenship unlawfully.
Federal prosecutors say Munyenyezi directed kidnapping, rape and murder during the April 1994 genocide in Rwanda in which about 800,000 people were killed during an ethnic bloodletting.
Prosecutors say Munyenyezi lied about her connection to the genocide when seeking citizenship.
Munyenyezi's husband and mother-in-law are in custody in Tanzania on genocide charges.
If convicted, Munyenyezi could be sentenced to 10 years in prison and stripped of her citizenship.
