The U.S. Department of Justice is accusing police in Warren Jeffs' polygamous sect on the Utah-Arizona border of altering police reports.

The reports were requested as part of a lawsuit filed in 2012 against the towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona. The Justice Department alleges the towns have supported a campaign of intimidation against those outside of the polygamous sect, denying them housing and municipal services.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1wWgYTP ) court documents show federal attorneys contend several police reports they requested were altered before being submitted. In one, calls made to dispatch were deleted.

Hildale attorney Blake Hamilton says police were trying to finalize reports and correct embarrassing grammar and spelling mistakes.

Both sides are asking a federal judge in Arizona to rule in their favor.
