An FBI special agent charged with his wife's slaying is facing a second trial after his first trial ended with jurors failing to reach a unanimous verdict.

A new multiday trial for Arthur Gonzales is scheduled to begin Sept. 8 in Stafford Circuit Court. The first trial ended in a mistrial in March.

Gonzales was charged with second-degree murder in the April 2013 shooting death of 42-year-old Julie Gonzales. The 43-year-old defendant testified that he shot his wife in self-defense after she attacked him during an argument. Prosecutors say Gonzales staged the crime scene.

The Free Lance-Star reports that Gonzales' attorney has filed a motion to dismiss the murder and firearms charges and face a no more than a manslaughter charge in the second trial.
