An early-morning car crash at the Pinellas County Jail that killed an employee is under investigation.
Deputies say the crash happened in a secure area of the jail that the public cannot access around 2:30 a.m. According to the Sheriff's office, Sgt. Richard Keyser, a 44-year-old corrections officer who was off duty at the time, drove through a fence and into a nearby retention pond.
Witnesses told deputies Keyser was in his personal car, and it suddenly accelerated and left the roadway.
The view from SkyFox over the scene showed tire tracks heading towards the pond from a hole in a metal fence.
Divers have been called in to recover Keyser's body and vehicle.
The Major Accident Team is investigating the crash and looking into why the officer was even in the area at the time. Deputies say the Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine a cause of death.
The Sheriff's office said their thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Keyser's family and friends.
