A former Milwaukee police officer is set to appear in court after being charged with reckless homicide in the slaying of a black man.

Dominique Heaggan-Brown is charged in the Aug. 13 death of 23-year-old Sylville Smith, a shooting that sparked two days of rioting on Milwaukee's north side. His first court appearance is Friday.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said police body-camera video showed that Smith had a gun in his hand when Heaggan-Brown fired a first shot that hit Smith in the bicep. Chisholm said Heaggan-Brown's second shot to Smith's chest came after Smith was down and no longer had a gun. The shots were fired in less than two seconds.

Heaggan-Brown was fired in October after he was accused in an alleged sexual assault.
