BARNSTABLE, Mass. – An attorney for a Coast Guardsman charged with killing a petty officer and injuring two other people in Massachusetts says they plan an insanity defense.
The Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/20uQHX5 ) reports that Adrian Loya's attorney, Drew Segadelli, said in court Wednesday that an independent psychiatric evaluation found Loya didn't understand his actions were wrong.
Prosecutors say Loya forced his way into a Bourne condominium last February and killed Coast Guard Petty Officer Lisa Trubnikova and injured her wife, Petty Officer Anna Trubnikova, before shooting a responding officer.
Prosecutors plan to hire an expert to evaluate Loya.
Loya has pleaded not guilty to murder. He is being held in a state mental health facility.
Segadelli says Loya and Lisa Trubnikova were friends but had a "falling out" after she married Anna.
