PROVIDENCE, R.I. – An epileptic Rhode Island man whose doctor told him not to drive has been sentenced to five years of probation for fatally striking a Navy detective with a truck.
Fifty-four-year-old Alan Bradley, of Middletown, was sentenced Thursday in federal court. His first year of probation will be served on home confinement.
Bradley was convicted in June of reckless operation of a motor vehicle resulting in death.
He had been warned by his physician to not drive because of his epilepsy. He was driving a government vehicle on Naval Station Newport in September 2013 when he hit Frank Lema, of Middletown, who was walking.
Bradley's lawyer didn't immediately return a message seeking comment. The attorney previously said Bradley had a valid license and was taking medication for his condition.
Bradley also must perform community service and pay restitution.
