LAWRENCE, N.J. – Charges were filed Friday against a dump truck driver who was accused of ramming into a car at a traffic light, sending both vehicles into a nearby lake and killing the car's driver.
Daniel C. Everett, 38, of Westampton, faces death by auto and other charges in the Thursday collision that killed 59-year-old James McLean, of Trenton.
Witnesses told police that Everett was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed when he hit McLean's car at a Lawrence intersection and pushed it more than 200 feet into a park and then into a lake, prosecutors said. McLean's car was stopped at a red light.
It took emergency workers more than two hours to remove the dump truck from the water to get to Everett's body, which was inside the badly damaged car.
Authorities said Friday that Everett remains hospitalized with accident-related injuries. Bail was set at $250,000, and it wasn't immediately known whether he had an attorney.
The accident remained under investigation.
A person answering the phone at the company that owns the dump truck, Scorer Trucking, of Pemberton, declined to comment Friday.
