Dori J. Maynard, a journalist and champion of diversity in news coverage, has died. She was 56.

The Oakland-based Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, at which she presided, confirmed that she died Tuesday at her Oakland home. A cause of death was not immediately known.

The daughter of Robert C. Maynard, the former owner of the Oakland Tribune, Maynard herself was a journalist, working at the Detroit Free Press, the Bakersfield Californian and The Patriot Ledger, in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Maynard had been president of the institute founded by her father since 2001.
