Authorities say a Tennessee sheriff's deputy shot a man while investigating suspected illegal activity.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that the shooting happened Wednesday evening in Columbia.

The TBI says a preliminary investigation has found that the Maury County Sheriff's Department arranged to meet a male subject as part of the investigation. The bureau says the situation escalated when deputies tried to arrest the man, and at least one deputy fired a gun, hitting him.

The man was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His condition was unknown.

Officials have not identified the man and deputy or revealed their races.

The TBI statement says investigative findings will be turned over to the District Attorney General.
