Defense wants delay in Ohio trial in 11 slayings

CLEVELAND – Defense attorneys for a Cleveland man charged with killing 11 women and dumping their bodies around his property say they cannot be ready for trial next week because expert witnesses need time to prepare.

Attorneys for 51-year-old Anthony Sowell (SOH'-wehl) asked the judge Tuesday to delay the trial by at least six months. It's scheduled to begin Monday.

The judge plans to meet with both sides Wednesday at a previously scheduled hearing.

Prosecutors say the defense has had enough time to prepare. They say relatives of victims and the community deserve timely justice.

The defense submitted statements from four experts who say they need more time.

Sowell is accused of killing the women and hiding their remains in and around his home. He has pleaded not guilty. He could get the death penalty if convicted.
