CHARLESTON, S.C. – Audio recorded by a Charleston deputy's dashcam indicates that he gave a man who had phoned 911 for help less than two seconds to drop a gun before shooting him in the neck.
Video provided to Charleston-area media outlets Monday shows that the sheriff's deputy shouted "show me your hands" and fired almost immediately, hitting 26-year-old Bryant Heyward behind his home in the Hollywood community May 7.
Heyward is black and was critically injured in the shooting. Deputy Keith Tyner is white and has been suspended during the investigation.
Heyward had called 911 to report two men trying to break into his house. When deputies arrived, two men left on bicycles. Heyward came out carrying a gun and was shot.
The video does not show the shooting but did record the voices.
