Don't mess with the Waffle House in Fayetteville.

That's the message a would-be robber got when he tried to steal money from the 24-hour restaurant in North Carolina early Saturday morning.

Local media outlets reported that police said the man pointed what was described as an AK-47-style rifle at employees and demanded money.

Police said a patron confronted the man, and a struggle began. Several patrons chased the man from the restaurant. Police said in a news release the man was last seen jumping a nearby fence.

The Waffle House manager said Monday that employees aren't allowed to talk with reporters and referred questions to company headquarters in Norcross, Georgia. Voice and email messages left with a spokeswoman by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.
