The Marion County coroner's office says an Indianapolis school bus driver suffered a heart attack just before a March crash that killed him and a 5-year-old girl.

Chief Deputy Coroner Alfarena Ballew says autopsy results received Tuesday show 60-year-old Thomas Spencer II apparently lost control of the bus when he suffered a heart attack on March 12 and crashed into a concrete bridge pillar.

Spencer and 5-year-old Donasty Smith were killed, and 10 other students from Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter School were injured.

Ballew says Spencer died from multiple blunt force injuries suffered in the crash. She says he was diabetic, had heart disease and was obese. No drugs or alcohol were found in his system.
