Condo association asks soldier to take down American flag

An Alabama condo association's request to have a couple remove an American flag from outside their condo has sparked a heated debate on social media. reports that Staff Sgt. Brandon Weir and his wife, Lauren, of Huntsville, received a note from the complex owner Monday stating that the flag violates the association's rules.

The note urged the couple to remove the flag as soon as possible to keep the community tidy, according to the report.

After Weir posted the note on the Facebook pages of several veterans support groups, the story went viral and a group of concerned citizens went to the home and held up flags in protest, the station reported.'s Facebook post on the story had more than 2,500 "likes" as of Tuesday evening.

Property manager Carol Coffey told she has been flooded with phone calls and emails in support of the soldier. She said the note was not intended to be an attack on the American flag.

“I served in Afghanistan, I served in Iraq and I served in Kuwait. I am not anti-veteran and I am not a communist,” Coffey told the station.

Coffey added that the association is considering revising bylaws to allow a certain number of American flags outside each unit.
