Upon their arrival, officials said they saw a man firing a weapon. An exchange of gunfire ensued, during which one cop was wounded.

The officer, identified as 5-year veteran Cem Duzel, is currently in surgery and in critical condition, KRDO reported. The officer made news in 2015 for his help in rescuing a bear cub whose head got stuck inside a plastic protein powder bottle.

The gunman was also shot and suffered injuries that are not life-threatening, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said.
