COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs police have arrested a man suspected of threatening officers who were with his son when the young man jumped from a moving police car and was hit by another vehicle, suffering fatal injuries.
Lt. Lari Sevene of the El Paso County sheriff's office tells The Gazette that 43-year-old John P. Winkler was arrested Thursday after allegedly making threats. She says he was arrested on a warrant out of Oklahoma.
Winkler's son, 20-year-old John R. Winkler of Colorado Springs, died Tuesday. Police say officers were taking him to jail when he jumped out of a police car going about 60 mph. They say he was hit by another car while running across Interstate 25 and died from his injuries.
Police are investigating the alleged threats by the elder Winkler. It was unknown if he had an attorney.
