College in NYC suburbs raises $80,000 a year with valet parking, shuttle to nearby airport

A state college in the New York City suburbs has earned hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships and other programs by offering parking spaces and bus rides to a nearby airport.

The Purchase College program serves travelers headed to the Westchester County Airport, where finding a parking spot can be a pricey problem.

The college charges $10 a day; 24 hours at the airport is $28.80.

Mostly by word of mouth, business has climbed to 12,600 cars so far this year.

A college official says the service clears about $80,000 each year for the college, which is part of the State University of New York. The money goes to "student scholarships, capital improvements and institutional grants," according to signs on the shuttle buses, which are painted with airplanes and mortarboards.
