Two Cleveland police officers mistakenly thought a dead woman's body on the side of an interstate was a deer, despite motorists calling 911 and telling dispatchers they saw a body along the stretch of road, Fox8.com reports.
"I got a quick glimpse of it as I went by. Boy that looks like a body. So I drove backwards and sure enough it looks like a black woman," one caller told a 911 dispatcher. "She's definitely dead, that's for sure."
The body turned out to be 28-year-old Angel Bradley-Crockett, a mother of three. She had been beaten and strangled.
"We're disappointed. This was at the very minimum a mistake. It may involve dereliction of duty, certainly negligent activities on the parts of the officers," Cleveland Public Safety Director Martin Flask told Fox8.com.
Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath says the two officers are remorseful, but Flask says they will have to face consequences for their mistakes.
There are currently no suspects in the woman's death.
