GREAT FALLS, Mont. – A federal civil rights complaint says the Fort Peck Tribe and Wolf Point-area law enforcement agencies conspired to illegally round up homeless people in July 2013 to prevent them from panhandling during a rodeo and parade weekend.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Great Falls, says up to 50 Native Americans were held in inhumane conditions overnight and released the next day without charges being filed.
The Great Falls Tribune reports (http://gftrib.com/29J2qj7) the complaint seeks damages for emotional and physical injuries resulting from the mass arrest and detention during the annual Wild Horse Stampede.
The complaint names several tribal officials, the Wolf Point police chief and city council, two Bureau of Indian Affairs agents and the Roosevelt County sheriff and county attorney.
