A 93-year-old Central Texas woman has been fatally shot at her home by a police officer answering a call about a person with a gun.

Police in Hearne on Wednesday did not immediately release the name of the woman who died at a hospital in Bryan.

Officers on Tuesday night responded to a 911 call about a disturbance involving a woman with a gun. Investigators did not immediately say if the elderly woman who was killed was the same individual.

The officer has been put on paid administrative leave. Robertson County District Attorney Coty Siegert says the case will be presented to a grand jury. Texas Rangers are also investigating.

Hearne is a town of about 4,500, located 60 miles southeast of Waco.
