Plans that would widen concourses at New York City's Penn Station, raise ceiling heights and create a light-filled waiting area across the street have been greeted by commuters with cautious approval.

But there also was skepticism Wednesday about whether the long-talked-about effort at the country's busiest train station would come to fruition.

The plans call for a new train hall in the nearby historic James A. Farley Post Office, which would be named the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Train Hall in honor of the late U.S. senator. The hall is slated to open in 2020.

The underground maze of concourses making up the current Penn Station would be rebuilt.
