A man who is accused of assaulting and carjacking a parking control officer died while being arrested a short time later -- and officials are now investigating the death.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said a parking control officer for the city of Rosemead was punched in the head by the suspect while writing a ticket early Tuesday morning. Deputies said he then took the officer's city vehicle and fled.

Deputies caught up with the man at a nearby McDonald's restaurant about 20 minutes later. They said they responded with force after he lunged at one of them. Deputies said the man became unresponsive after being restrained and handcuffed. A department spokeswoman said no shots were fired, but didn't specify what type of force was used.

The man's identity hasn't been released.
